Pacific Asian Bistro

Sushi restaurants are everywhere, a common feature along our strip-mall lined streets, whereas a decade ago they were but a rarity. For lover's of raw fish and rice, the abundance of options means you never need to wander for from home for a good meal. And the First Coast region does indeed have its fair share of really good, even great, little sushi joints. But an unfortunate consequence of this surplus of options is that finding an extraordinary sushi restaurant can be quite difficult, particularly with the impetus to skimp on the quality in favor of economy like the rest of the competition.

Once upon a time there was a restaurant called Botan that was conveniently situated on my way home from work. For a great many months, my co-workers and I would frequently stop in and order horrendous amounts of sushi. This, of course, led to us directly interacting with the Sushi chefs whom, as anyone who ever visited Botan in its heyday can attest, were masters of their craft and would surprise us with unique culinary creations that were nowhere to be found on the menu. Sadly, due to differences between the owners, Botan was quite suddenly sold off and became a shell of its former self.

About a year later, Mas, former Botan sushi chef and consummate culinary artist, resurfaced again with a new restaurant: Pacific Asian Bistro. Located down in Palencia Village near the northern edge of St. Augustine, Pacific serves up all the typical Chinese and Japanese influenced fusion dishes we've come to expect from Asian bistros but at a much higher standard. From the familiar hibachi plates to the common Chinese restaurant fare, the names of the menu items are the same but the taste, presentation, and overall quality stretch far beyond what you've come to expect.

Additionally there are a lot of uncommon items. Delectable lamb chops were on offer on our recent visit. These succulent morsels, which even the chef admitted were not up to his standards, were far more delicious than any I've had the pleasure of tasting at some of Jacksonville's better known fine-dining establishments. Another treat was some monkfish liver: a musky, creamy (and slightly controversial) delicacy popular in upscale sushi bars.

But it's really in the sushi department where Pacific delivers unparalleled excellence. Every piece of sashimi, every roll, every gourmet creation is flawless. You will find a lot of the standards here, from simple rolls and sashimi to decadent, sculptured tempura monsters. These are all exceptionally crafted using fresh, flavorful ingredients. There are even some incredibly novel and equally delicious special rolls that are part art, all flavor. But if you want to treat yourself to something extraordinary, take a seat at the sushi bar and ask for a surprise.

The menu at Pacific is a suggestion, a guide for those who need to know exactly what to expect. For the more adventurous, for those with high culinary standards, the real trick is to leave your meal up to the chef. Perhaps you can go as far as suggesting what you like and maybe what you'd prefer to avoid, but trusting Mas with the final decision on what you're going to eat is the best course of action. I can't begin to tell you the names of the items I ate as they don't seem to be on the menu, but every single plate was incredible. You probably won't get exactly what you were expecting and if you'd see the item before you on the menu, chances are that you wouldn't have selected it, but the end result is always more than satisfactory.

At Pacific you will find the best sushi North Florida has to offer and I limit it to this region only because it's where I have the most experience. The prices are a bit higher than most of the other sushi restaurants around but well worth the cost and certainly not as expensive as comparable, upscale establishments. After all, what's a few extra dollars and miles when the food is this extraordinary?

Yummy Sushi

The latest sushi house to arrive on the Southside scene, the Tinseltown region in particular, is Yummy Sushi. This now brings the total number of sushi restaurants in that quarter-mile radius to a whopping four. This would seem like overkill until you compare it to the number of hot wing and Budweiser restaurants in the same area and you quickly discover that they're still greatly outnumbered.

yummy sushi sign

Yummy Sushi, like Crazy Sushi and Yo Sushi, are hoping that their clever name will serve as the initial force to pull you in and then, once they have you in their clutches, they intend to earn your allegiance through their food and atmosphere. Yummy's got an edge on the atmosphere if you're looking to impress. It's fairly sleek inside and would be a good place to bring a date or prospective client. There's a full bar and many large TV screens to help entertain your partner once your charm has worn off so you won't have to spend that period between sipping miso soup and fumbling sushi rolls in a terribly awkward silence.

fancy roll

The sushi is indeed yummy and, depending on the roll, quite attractive to boot. Many of the rolls are arranged in a creative fashion, some are even sculpted into dragons. I got the fancy roll, a tasty analog of Crazy Sushi's cold roll which uses thin slices of cucumber to hold everything together instead of rice, and the signature yummy roll which contained tempura shrimp and some other goodies. There's no menu online so I can't tell you exactly what was in either of the two but I can confidently assert that they were both delicious (especially the fancy roll, I could eat that everyday and not grow tired of it) and sufficiently satiated my immense appetite. Full on two rolls which didn't cost a lot of money, Yummy Sushi delivered.

There's no website but, in my vain attempts to find one, I discovered that they are very alike Yummy Sushi in New York. Strikingly similar logo, similar roll presentation; are they perhaps a chain in disguise? Have we been had? Regardless, I was satisfied and will now find it even more difficult to decide which sushi restaurant to visit in this area of town.

Crazy Sushi

It had been over six months since I last went out for sushi; the two most recent experiences so lackluster that it put me off the stuff for a while and made me question why I liked it so much in the first place. So despite living within walking distance of Crazy Sushi (as walking-distance as it gets in Jacksonville), the place never really piqued my interest. Sure it was close but I had become jaded towards my past love for sushi. And even though I was fully aware that it is a consistent winner in Folio Weekly's "Best Of Jax" listings I couldn't bring myself to stop by.

crazy sushi interior

This past weekend we'd seemingly run out of unexplored options so I begrudgingly agreed to travel the mere mile and see what the fuss was all about. First off, the innards of this place are far nicer than I was expecting based on its location. Definitely not fancy but not as haphazardly thrown together as some of the other local establishments. Don't get me wrong, I love holes in the wall but only if they have character. This restaurant takes the character and a bit of class as well making it a place suitable for dinner dates, casual affairs, or a lazy afternoon meal at the tables outside.

Our waitress also happened to be one of the nicest and most chipper individuals in the world. We wanted to take her home and keep her around just to cheer us up. But beyond just putting me in a good mood, our friendly waitress did something far more rewarding: she introduced me to what is now my favorite sushi roll. Being a bit neurotic about nutrition, the one facet of the sushi experience that makes me a little uneasy is the rice. I don't dislike the flavor of rice in the slightest but tend to avoid it in other circumstances when possible. As if sensing this, the waitress recommended the Cold Roll which was packed with tuna, crab meat, and avocado; all things I love. But instead of being wrapped in the typical rice and seaweed combination, the Cold Roll is held together by a long, coiled strip of cucumber; a perfect combination for health nuts and carb cutters.

Wanting to enjoy the authentic Crazy Sushi experience, I also opted for the Crazy Roll: a shrimp tempura roll with salmon on top. Not as healthy as the other roll but very flavorful. For those who don't like fish in the raw or at all, there are plenty of hibachi plates on offer that are stacked with the meat of your choice, vegetables, noodles, and rice.

crazy sushi chicken

Prices are comparable to the other sushi places around town. The two rolls with the accompanying complimentary soup and salad more than satisfied my hunger and there was plenty of the hibachi chicken dish left to take home. While I won't kick myself too hard for not going sooner, I'll be sure to make up for my egregious error by heading to Crazy Sushi the next time I have a craving for raw fish.

Sake House

Despite my extreme fondness for consuming raw fish, we don't often visit sushi restaurants. Far too many offer the exact same menu items prepared in the exact same fashion with very few deviations beyond the signature house roll. This is in no way intended to criticize the quality of the sushi, simply to lament the lack of variety in our region's raw fish scene.

The Sake House in Riverside is a nicely decorated establishment with an outside eating area and offers everything you'd expect from a local sushi joint. The food was good and the staff was friendly but there's not really much more to elaborate upon. Suffice to say, if you're in the Riverside area and craving raw fish then don't hesitate to stop in.

There was a good sushi place near my work at one point but, for various reasons, it is no longer in business. However, the chef who made it great is now working at another restaurant between Jacksonville and St. Augustine. We'll try go there sometime soon and write up all of the details.
