La Nopalera

Jacksonville has two iconic mini restaurant chains. We've already covered one, European Street, reigning local king of sandwiches, happy hour beer, and pastel paint. The other great Jacksonville establishment is La Nopalera, queen of authentic Mexican cuisine and giant margaritas.

Their website boasts seven locations, and then ten, and then lists only four (including one in Savannah) so I'm not too sure what to make of the numbers but a quick Google map search indicates seven restaurants in the Jacksonville/North Florida region.

As with most Mexican eateries there are a lot of things to choose from with various combinations. La Nopalera states repeatedly that they make their food mild and will provide hot sauce for those wishing to spice their meal up a bit. The portions are rather large and we were able to stuff ourselves on one $9 combo that contained a special beef burrito (the meat was actually pretty nice and lean, not sloppy and oily like what you would find at many other Mexican and Mexican-inspired restaurants), a chicken enchilada, and a tostaguac (an unpronounceable word for a tortilla topped with beef, lettuce, and guacamole).

The real danger involved in eating at La Nopalera is that you may leave the place dangerously drunk. The margaritas range in size from large to extra large, contain a heaping dose of tequila, and are often found to be offered in a buy-one-get-one-free deal. So don't skip out on the food, you're going to need it to soak up some of the booze.
